Refreshing Yogurt with Cucumber (Tzatziki) Recipe – A Cool Delight for Any Occasion

Jump to Recipe

The mix of yogurt with cucumber comes across as one of the most refreshing and light dishes that is also versatile and delicious. This classic dish can be used as a side or a dip that feels just as home when paired with warm pita bread as it does with grilled meats. We’re diving into the world of the yogurt and cucumber combination today and exploring the delights of such as simple combination of ingredients.

What is Tzatziki?

You may ask, why do you call it Tzatziki? This is not a Greek dish! I’ve eaten similar yogurt and cucumbers before and they’re called something else. You are right!

The origins of tzatziki are unclear, and my investigations are not conclusive. Some state that the origins are within the Ottoman Empire, stating that the “tzatziki” comes from the Turkish word “cacık”, which means “yogurt soup”. Others state that it is originally from India and was spread by merchants. In any case, we know the end result is delicious.

Different cuisines have similar dishes to Greek tzatziki, including Raita in India, Tarator in the Balkans, Labne in the Levant, and Mast-o-Khiar in Persian cuisine. These dishes all share similarities, such as the use of yogurt, cucumber, and herbs. The fact that these regional variations use similar ingredients, and look similar doesn’t mean they are the same dish. Each regional variation has its own unique consistency and flavor, which is due to the type of yogurt used as well as the different combinations of herbs and spices used to prepare it.

The reality is that the combination of yogurt, cucumber, herbs, and spices is a popular dish in Greece and many other countries around the world. The best thing we can do is embrace it, experiment with all possible variations, and enjoy the end result with the people we love.

This recipe is simple to make in less than 15 minutes, and only requires a few ingredients:

Ingredients:

  • 2 English cucumbers
  • 2 cups Plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2 tbsp chopped mint
  • 2 tbsp cilantro (optional)
  • A sprinkle of cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste

The preparation is straightforward, to start, cut the cucumber in half lengthwise and seed it. Then, cut the cucumber into half-inch cubes. Add salt and pepper to taste and let it sit for a few minutes. This will help to draw out some of the moisture from the cucumber.

While the cucumber is sitting, mince the garlic cloves and chop the mint and cilantro. Then, add the plain Greek yogurt, minced garlic, chopped mint, and cilantro, and mix everything. Once all ingredients are mixed, serve with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, garnish with a mix of mint and cilantro, and enjoy!

I love cilantro’s fresh and slight tanginess and add it even though it may not be a traditional ingredient. Cilantro just pairs well with the rest of the ingredients and elevates the overall experience.
